It's also the elk rut (mating season) and the bulls are busy sparring with their antlers and keeping tabs on their "harem" of cows. We pretty much have decided to spend 2-3 nights in Canmore, but also want to spend a few nights in or close to Jasper National Park, but availability is very limited. That is a really good time of year to come for wildlife, as the bears are busily feeding before hibernation, and are congregated mostly in the valley bottoms where there is still lots of vegetation and berries.
